Setting Up Your Workspace at Home

Whether you are a remote worker, a student, professional, freelancer, creative or an entrepreneur, having a well thought out, and planned home workspace is a rest assured way to boost your productivity. In recent times, people now chose to work from home more often than not, and this is no surprise, the perks are endless and the comfortability of performing all your tasks at your own pace in your own environment is a huge selling point for the remote working force. Globally, remote work has been adopted by a lot people as a lifestyle, and to facilitate this chosen method of work requires intentional planning, and preparations and setting up to make sure your efficiency is stringent, your comfort paramount  and distractions kept to a minimal.   That being said, if and when you are ready to create a workspace in your personal environment and thrive while working there, here are some important things to consider in the process of setting up your home workspace.   Location Choosing the right spot in your home or personal environment to set up your workspace is an important first step. Deciding where most of your productive hours will be spent carries with it a lot of gravity and sets the tone for what your work life will be like for the foreseeable future.  Ideally the location you should chose is a quiet area with little foot traffic and room for distractions.  Ensure that it is a dedicated space, use a spare bedroom, or your study or a corner of your room, just ensure there’s a physical boundary between your work and home life to ensure you are in that mental space of total focus. Noise infested areas should be avoided by all means. Chose a corner away from all the noise and if the noise can’t be avoided then invest noise cancelling headphones and other noise reducing ideas like curtains, rugs and so on.  Your Gadgets and Equipment Your equipment and tools that are important for you to function in your workspace bear importance and careful consideration. Especially when you will be carrying out your daily tasks in that workspace. Your computer and accompanying accessories should be of the standard and specifications required for your work. Added to this, your internet connection and speed should be stable as remote work is impossible without an internet connection. Whether you’re using a modem, MiFi or router, or even a Wi-Fi they should be all reliable to get you through your work routine seamlessly and without hitch.  Your Storage System This isn’t about data storage, we’re talking about your physical components. An organized workspace is mentally stimulating and encourages productivity. Make use of shelving units for your books, files or decorative items, drawers and cabinets are also keen methods of storage for items like your stationaries, documents and cables. To avoid clutter on your desk, only keep items that you are sure you will need on a daily basis for easy reach. All other items should be kept in your other storage compartments.  A Comfortable Chair This is too important to just gloss over, the chair you chose can be the difference between your workspace feeling like your comfort zone and it being an annoying place you have to be at. Poor seating affects your posture, is the source of back pain and more often than not even exhaustion. Invest in a comfortable seat. Chose a chair that provides posture support and encourages spinal alignment. The seat should be cushioned with an arable material that will ensure comfort during those long hours. The chair should also be adjustable so you can modify it to your height, lumbar support and armrests. A comfortable chair isn’t just for your enjoyment, it is important for your health and productivity.      Design and Decoration The ambience you are trying to go for should be personalized to your taste. Your workspace should inspire you, and those personal touches that you splash around makes your workspace feel more like your very own productive sphere or bubble. Chose a color palette that is calming, invigorating and soft hued, this will help improve your focus by a full margin. Your décor should involve your favorite quotes, motivational phrases, some light artwork and a potted plant to create an atmosphere of serenity and concentration. One or two comfort items like a throw pillow or a footrest can do great wonders for your comfortability. This is your workspace so make sure your personal touch can be seen and felt in every single corner. Take full advantage of your space and set the tone for your productivity.  Your Budget Make sure you are considering your long term plans, the permanency of your set up and your budget when planning out your home workspace. Start out simple, if you are yet to establish yourself as a full remote worker, you don’t need to be throwing a fortune into flamboyant and ostentatious gadgets and furniture. All you need is a sturdy desk, a comfortable chair and some good lighting and you are all set to begin. You will know what to invest in with time, in things such as upgraded equipment, more durable furniture and more comfortable décor. If your set up isn’t going to be permanent then chose furniture that can easily be moved or adapted to different needs when the time comes.  Lighting Lighting affects your productivity and health. Poor lighting will put a strain on your eyes, which leads to headaches and other complications if not managed well. Prevent this by positioning your desk near a source of natural lighting, however ensure to avoid direct glare on your screen. Position a desk lamp for your night sessions and make sure the brightness can be adjusted. For ambience go for soft lighting that hang overhead to balance the room’s brightness and reduce harsh contrasts.   Conclusion Your home workspace will be where the rate of your productivity will be determined. A functional remote work setup, personal design and the right equipment and gadgets and tools should all be selected and placed with great care. It is not just about setting your PC on a table, that balance between comfort and productivity should be achieved as well. So take the time and appropriate planning to set up and invest in your home workspace.
